World Coffee Day

The popularity of coffee is undeniable. After water, it is the second most consumed drink in the world, earning itself a deserved day of the year. The tradition of coffee day presumably originated in Japan in 1983. However, to the question of when World Coffee Day is in different countries, we get different answers.

Although the International Coffee Society designated October 1 as World Coffee Day in 2014, many countries continue to follow previous traditions. For example, April 14 is considered World Coffee Day in Portugal and August 22 in Peru. The tradition of the World Coffee Day became established in Hungary in 2009 and we have been celebrating black nectar on September 29 in Hungary ever since.

Where does coffee come from?

The origin of coffee is obscured. Legend has it that he originated in Ethiopia and started his world-conquering journey from there. The origin of the word coffee is also derived from this by many. According to the legend, a shepherd living near the Ethiopian town of Kaffa observed that his goats stayed awake all night if they had previously consumed the red berries of a bush.

According to written records, coffee was first grown in Yemen and from there came to Europe through Turkish mediation and then conquered the whole world.

According to research, the origin of the word coffee can also be derived from here. “Coffee” is derived from the Arabic word “Qahwah,” which means “bean wine”. The Islamic religion forbids the consumption of alcohol, so coffee spread as a drink instead. The Turks took over the popular drink as “kadveh” and Dutch sailors brought it to Europe as “koffie”.

The microplastics phenomenon is of serious concern from both an environmental and a health perspective. Microplastics are literally all around us: they are present in water - including drinking water - soil and air. Living organisms at the bottom of the food chain often mix the nutrients with particles that are often invisible to the naked eye and thus enter the food chain. Because of the newness of the problem, no research has yet been done on the long-term effects of microplastics, but it is already clear that they are harmful to our health and the environment.
