The health of many of us is endangered by the concentration of lead in water!

Drinking water quality in Hungary
Hungary has excellent hydrographic features. The quality of drinking water is checked with 60,000 samples a year, which makes it 99-100 percent adequate. However, there may be large differences in quality and composition from area to area.

How come there is a contaminant in tap water after all?
In Hungary, about 95 percent of drinking water comes from groundwater. Surface water leaching into the soil may be contaminated and contaminants of natural origin may be present, but their levels in drinking water will not rise above the limit value. On the other hand, harmful substances such as lead can also enter the water distribution network, ie water pipes, which can also be harmful to health.

Where is the most dangerous?
Today, the problem affects approximately 750,000 buildings in Hungary. The piping system of old, mostly downtown residential buildings is still made up of lead pipes in many places today. In these pipes, lead is constantly leaking into the drinking water. Many factors affect its extent, such as the rate, amount, and temperature of water passage. The problem affects 25 percent of buildings before 1945, primarily Budapest and cities with more than 5,000 inhabitants.

What can I do to drink water safely in my home?

  • Thoroughly drain the water from the tap before consumption, for up to 4-5 minutes. This solution is neither budget-friendly nor environmentally friendly. Many people choose to buy mineral water instead. The same can be said for this, plus the constant mineral water bottle shoeing is an extra plus, and plastic bottles have an even bigger ecological footprint.

  • Balloon water supply can be a good solution to the problem. Montivíz, which is surfacing in the Balaton Uplands, is under constant control, thus guaranteeing high-quality mineral water. All this with home delivery. Empty balloons are shipped and refilled after proper cleaning to minimize environmental impact.
  • A network-mounted water filter can also be a solution. However, it does not matter which one we choose at all. Most, especially simpler water filtration equipment tends to make matters worse. Depending on the type, certain contaminants are removed, but beneficial substances can also be greatly extracted from the water and some substances, such as copper or nickel, can melt into the water. Of the 9 water purifiers tested by the National Center for Public Health, only one reduced lead concentrations without adverse effects. Montivíz only sells and rents high-quality European-made network vending machines with state-of-the-art filtering equipment. We also perform the necessary maintenance to prevent the most common problem: the growth of bacteria.

Who can somehow replace the wiring?
Waterworks are only responsible for the quality of drinking water up to the building’s water meter. A complete replacement of the building’s water network can only be a solution to reduce lead levels. However, the owner is not obliged to replace the pipes. Replacing the wires in the apartment can even make the situation worse, as the contact of pipes of different materials can help dissolve harmful substances.

Replacing the entire plumbing network is difficult and costly. The lead content of the water does not affect washing, washing and bathing, it is not absorbed through the skin. Thus, the easiest way to solve this problem is to deliver balloon water to your home or rent a network water dispenser. Boiling the water will only make the situation worse, the lead will not leave under the influence of heat, so only the lead concentrate in the water will increase. Our devices have both hot and cold water functions, so this is not a problem either.
